I’ve used this product for about a year now and have tried all three flavours. I’ve found a whey protein powder that works for me and here’s why.

About the product

  • High quality whey protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of quality muscle mass
  • Amino acids perfect for faster muscle growth
  •  Glutamine for optimum muscle repair
  • This product provides the best forms of Whey protein for anyone who is engaged in intense weight training.

The Benefits

It’s high in protein and low in carbohydrates, a factor in my perfect lean muscle building formula. Contain L-leucine, one of the most important amino acids used for muscle building. Furthermore, it contains l-valine and L-isoleucine, which are also important amino acids for muscle growth.

All three are essential in muscle repair and growth. These can all be found in meats, fish and dairy products for example, but because they must be gained through diet, it is useful to supplement them too.

It has a high proportion of protein and lower in carbs, so I usually have one shake per day, and occasionally I skip a day because my diet gives me enough protein. The product lasts me over a month and I have stretched it to 2 months before by having half servings sometimes, which still have nearly 20g of protein!

Strawberry is best. I’m not usually a fan of strawberry flavour in general. However, compared to other shakes it tastes great! The other flavours can be a bit sickly but are also nice, so if you don’t like strawberry, there is a good alternative.

The Drawbacks

It contains lactose, therefore is unsuitable for people who are lactose intolerant. Furthermore, it doesn’t have the same benefit if mixed only with milk. I sometimes mix with half milk and half water, but mixing with water alone has had the most noticeable benefit to my energy levels and also my recovery time.

The product recipe has also been changed and has less protein than it did in the past, however 74g of protein per 100g and 33g of protein per serving is still very high!

My rating: 9/10

About the product

  •  A blend of rice, soy and pea proteins ideal for non-dairy, gluten free and vegan diets
  • This product has a high protein content which contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass
  • This product and other plant-based proteins include a higher concentration of BCAAs (important amino acids), L-arginine and L-glycine than whey, milk or egg proteins
  • There is vitamin B6, B12 and magnesium in each serving to help reduce tiredness and fatigue after workout
  • It contains Zinc and magnesium which contribute to protein synthesis ensuring bigger gains

The Comparison

The main difference is that this is suitable for vegans and suitable for people who are lactose intolerant, so you can still enjoy the benefits of a protein powder without the cramps and nausea faced when lactose intolerant etc.

Also, this product contains great levels of B6, B12 and magnesium and similar levels of low carbs high protein mix. Vitamin B6 and B12 are useful for giving the body energy and must be gained through our diet, so you can tick that off! This is another perfect option to build lean muscle. It is made up of plant based proteins as opposed to the glutamine that is in the Ultra whey. This can make it easier to digest which is great if you have a busy day and really don’t want to be bloated!

Why buy either of these products?

From experience, both have helped me build lean muscle whilst getting a bigger and better shape. Both last a long time if taken once a day and taste pretty good. Both will give you the same benefit of good value for money and good results. The only real difference is if you are lactose intolerant then the second product is more suitable for you! With that in mind, could you please like and share this post on your social accounts and follow mine which are linked below?

Could you take a look at some of my other fitness reviews too? They can be found here. Hope this helped, give these products a try!

  1. Hi Nick,
I wasn’t familiar with these before. I will definitely check them out as I need to find a way to get more protein in my diet, without spending a lot of time in preparation. A protein shake is an easy way to add some protein without lots of extra carbs or fat, which I like. Do you think its better to use protein shakes before or after a workout or as a meal replacement? Not sure what the best way to use them is. Thanks.

    1. There are specific pre workout shakes you can try, however the products I’ve mentioned here are most suitable after workouts. I sometimes have a protein shake before bed so that it doesn’t get in the way of any of my meals and I get even more protein.

  2. Hi Nick,

Your Protein Powder Review Nice is spot on! I know because when I was in my teenage years to early 20’s I used to take a protein powder drink every day. Tasted terrible back then but I suffered it. I really had much energy for the grueling working hours I use to do, sometimes exceeding, 28 hours only to be called back in some 4 hours later.

So when you are on the go that much your body needs something like a good and effective Protein Powder and I know it got me through some of the longest hours of my life where I needed to be at a very high level no matter what.

    1. Hey Phillip,
Yeah I’m trying a vegan protein shake atm, this particular product doesn’t taste as good as whey protein but it’s bearable and has more types of proteins specific for building strong muscles so I think it’s worth it! I always make sure to have something that tastes nice on hand afterwards anyway haha! Thanks for your comment.

  3. Hi Nick, I have never tried SCI-MX protein powder before, I’ve tried just protein bars of this brand. Your review is really good and it seems like a decent product, I have lactose intolerance so it is really cool that you have introduced vegan option for people with lactose intolerance. Do you know is this vegan protein taste good and mixes well? Because I’ve tried few products in past which tasted awful and didn’t mix very well. Thanks for your review!

    1. Great! The idea was to help people who are lactose intolerant with that product! To be honest, the whey protein tastes better than the vegan option in this case. However, I think the V-gain mixes well you just need a bit more water than it recommends, or maybe the quality of my protein shaker isn’t good, but try it out with a bit more water and it will mix fine!

      1. Thanks for the tip, as long is mixes well and there are no big chunks in my shake I’m happy! Do you know what tastes do they have for vegan option? Maybe you can recommend what taste should I chose?

        1. The main 3 flavours are strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. Although, in some countries only chocolate is available if you’re using Amazon. I’d recommend strawberry but chocolate isn’t too bad! I tried the vanilla protein shake a while ago and I wouldn’t recommend that one!

  4. Hi there, I use protein powder to help supplement my diet so your review was very helpful to me. In January I tried a pea protein for the first time after only ever using whey protein. Flavour-wise it’s not that great, but I didn’t have the bloating and other issues I’ve noticed with the whey protein. Great to see another non-whey alternative here that tastes pretty good. Do you have a preference for the whey or non-whey, or do you just rotate as you feel like?

    1. Yeah I find in general the vegan alternatives aren’t as nice but digest quicker, which I think is good for someone needing to have lots of calories in a day, such as a boxer for example. I prefer the taste of the whey but I’m getting used to the less tasty but less bloating alternatives so I’d have to go with the latter!

  5. I haven’t used a good quality protein mix for a long time. I have i’ve gotten the cheapest stuff from wal-mart last couple times I bought any. I am wanting to get back in to working out this spring so I may have to try this stuff.
Not sure what U.S. dollar amount is as the price link showed different currency but when the time comes I will have to stop on and check… bookmarked this page

    1. These two are great quality so I’m glad you found them! Sorry about that! I’ve added a link that will work in dollars too! It’s next to “place to buy for US customers”, hope this helped! Have a great day.

  6. Your review came at a great time since I’m actually getting ready to buy some more protein powder for my husband. He’s an avid rock climber and gym rat so protein shakes are a must. He’s yet to find a brand he likes and stick to it though so we’re always trying new ones.

When he makes his protein shakes, he usually does half milk and half water because he says it helps with the taste plus you get a little more protein in there from the milk. I saw in your review that you saw more benefit from just using water to mix it though, do you know why that is?

    1. I used to have my protein with half milk half water and yes it does taste better! I prefer to take it with just water because I don’t get the bloating I do with milk added, it digests quicker. Also, this is possibly just me but I feel more tired after taking it with milk. So have you tried this brand before? If not I recommend the whey protein as it tastes better.

      1. Ok I gotcha. No haven’t tried this brand before yet, buy I’m definitely interested. Just haven’t found a protein supplement that really seemed to stick out enough to buy twice. They either taste really bad or they have a lot of sugar which kind of defeats the purpose in eating healthy. If he’s going to eat something high in sugar, he’d rather eat junk food.

I’ll check out the whey protein then since taste is important and he hasn’t had a problem with whey in the past. You said the strawberry is the best?

        1. I get that! There’s so much out there and it’s hard to find a protein powder lower in sugar. However this one is low in sugar and calories, the focus is on high quality protein. Strawberry is the best but I think chocolate is good too! I guess it can be personal preference but many friends prefer these flavours too!
